Employment in Arts and Culture

Definition:

Proportion of individuals, 15 years of age and over, employed in occupations in art, culture, recreation and sport according to the National Occupation Classification (NOC) system.

Methods and Limitations:

Occupation categorization refers to the kind of work performed by persons aged 15 years and over as determined by their kind of work and the description of the main activities in their job. The occupation data are produced according to the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system for the relevant year.

Employment in arts and culture refers to individuals under the NOC broad category of occupations in art, culture, recreation and sport.

This category includes occupations in art and culture including the preforming arts, film and video, broadcasting, journalism, writing, creative design, libraries and museums. It also includes occupations in recreation and sports.

These occupations are linked by subject matter to formal post-secondary education programs but have, for the most part, a range of acceptable qualifications. Occupations in this category are also characterized by a requirement for creative talent, such as for designers and performers, and for athletic ability in the area of sport.
